Vehicle History Report

CARFAX Snapshot
2006 Mercedes-Benz R500 AWD is powered by the venerable three-valve, 5.0-liter, 302-horse V-8 innovative seven-speed automatic. 339 pound-feet torque
Mercedes claims a 0-to-60-6.5 seconds for the R500. Top speed is limited to 130 mph.
These times represent good acceleration, considering that the engine is powering all four wheels full-time, and that the R-Class is no lightweight: the R500 weighs 4850. Still, given the dimensions--overall length is 203 inches, eight inches longer than the Cadillac SRX, more than four inches longer than the Cadillac Escalade--the R-Class's weight isn't bad, falling in between the two Cadillac models.

While the R-Class is, as mentioned, all-wheel drive, it's no off-roader. There are three open differentials--front, center, and rear--with torque distribution 50 percent to the front, 50 percent to the rear, in typical driving conditions. Loss of traction results in a redistribution of torque to the point where one wheel can get it all. Coupled with electronic traction control, stability control, brake assist, and four-wheel discs with anti-lock, the integrated safety system is as seamless as it gets.
In most every sense, the unibody R-Class is an all-new model. Suspension is four-wheel independent, with control arms up front and a four-link setup in the rear. An air suspension, offering three distinct firmness settings, is optional. At speeds of 77 mph or above, the air suspension drops the ride height a half-inch. On rough roads, a rocker switch on the dashboard can raise the vehicle by more than three inches, increasing ground clearance. Steering is rack and pinion and offers a solid on-center feel with just the right amount of boost.
Adding to the interior ambiance is an optional conventional sunroof, which is nice, but a panoramic glass sunroof that's more than five-and-a-half feet long also is optional. When open, half the sunroof fits over the other half. All four rear seats fold down individually; flip over all four, and the inevitable 4x8-foot sheet of plywood should fit. With all rear seats folded, there's about 85 cubic feet of cargo space. Besides all the electronic safety equipment designed to prevent collisions, there are standard side-curtain airbags for all three rows.
R500 comes with 18-inch wheels, slightly larger brakes, heated seats, a six-disc CD changer, and TeleAid, the emergency communications system, plus a few other features. Options include  a DVD-based navigation system, parking sensors, Xenon headlights, a harman/kardon stereo upgrade, and the air suspension.
